Zero Energy Home - PILOT PROJECT

Background

CPS Energy’s investigation into Zero Energy Homes (ZEH)/PEAK PERFORMANCE CONCEPT HOME to be conducted in two (2) phases over a period of three (3) years:

- Phase I. – Develop 3 housing units of same or similar configuration to serve as the laboratory

- Phase II - Assess the incremental cost of each energy efficient capability for implementation into energy conservation programs

The Hypothesis:

A properly designed ZEH program that drives the construction of highly energy efficient production homes in CPS Energy service area

Definition of a net zero energy home/building:

“a residential or commercial building with greatly reduced needs for energy through efficiency gains, with the balance of energy needs
supplied by renewable technologies.”

ZEH combines state-of-the-art energy-efficient design and equipment with on-site energy generation

ZEH should perform at 50% or better on energy conservation over homes constructed under standard construction processes.

ZEH concept has reached the tipping point in other parts of the country

- Typical investments in such programs range from $10,000 to $30,000 per unit
